The neck is one of the most vital and vulnerable points of the human body. It hosts major nerves in the form of the spinal cord, which connects your brain to the rest of the body. In addition is your airway, which allows you to get oxygen into your lungs. One can see why the throat is so important, but that’s common sense.

What doesn’t seem to be common sense is that the only thing really protecting the neck from impact forces is a bit of muscle around the neck and supporting ligaments other than the flexible neck. It’s important to have a strong neck because any impact on the head or neck can cause serious injury.
